SPECIAL
EVENTS
BY CAROL WEINER, SPECIAL EVENTS
One
City One Book, our annual city-wide reading program built around a book
selected by a committee of library staff people, is underway. This
year’s book, “The Soloist” by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez,
is being read across our community. If you haven’t read it yet, you may
check out one of the hundreds of copies available at either the Thousand
Oaks and Newbury Park Libraries.
The One City One Book committee has a seven-week
program of events and book discussions planned, culminating November 14
with a book reading and discussion by author and journalist Steve Lopez
at the Civic Arts Plaza Fred Kavli Theater at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are free
and may be obtained at either library. Call the library at 805-449-2660
ext. 229 or check the website
www.thousandoaksreads.org, for information about this and other
fabulous offerings connected to this socially-significant book.
One of the themes of the book is the redemptive
power of music. In keeping with this idea, we’ve organized a food drive
called The Power of Community—Making a Difference, which is an
opportunity for our community to help others by bringing non-perishable
food items for the Conejo Valley Food Bank. Collection boxes are located
in the Grant R. Brimhall and Newbury Park Branch libraries, and all
donations will help the homeless and others in need in our community and
WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
The Friends are planning a Cultural Bus Trip in
February. Once the details are confirmed, more information will be found
in the next FOCUS and in each library. The tentative date is February
27, 2010. If you have any questions, please call Carol Weiner at
805-480-1450.
